RAVING REVIEW: Deep within the recesses of her mind, fragments of Miki’s memories linger. They are abstract and confusing, but they haunt her days and nights. When a seemingly impossible wolf attack occurs, Miki is forced to confront these memories and seek her truth.

WHEN YOU OPEN THE DOOR is the debut film from director Eriko Katagiri that received its world premiere at Fantasia International Film Festival on July 25th, 2026. For a first feature, this film takes some big swings while remaining very intimate.

From the very first frame, WHEN YOU OPEN THE DOOR establishes its visual style with its dreamlike pacing and gorgeous cinematography, via the amazing Ashizawa Akiko. We float from shot to shot, apartment to workplace, taking in Miki’s world. The slow, deliberately long scenes may be unnerving, or even tedious, to some viewers. We are spectators in a story that we wish to be a part of, hoping to make it better somehow. It’s that feeling that connects us to Miki, wanting her to be understood by the people around her.

Miki is awkward and lonesome. Her partner cares for her deeply but cannot break down her walls. She longs for connection from her coworkers but has resigned to the fact she will remain an outcast. Thus, when Miki informs them she was attacked by a wolf on her lunch break, none of them believe her. This moment becomes a catalyst that will bring her face to face with who she really is.

Facing the resulting list of strange symptoms, Miki and her partner research, journal, and seek help from medical professionals. Throughout this journey, the audience is invited into the dreams and fractured memories of a woman who has felt different and alone since childhood. These feelings finally change when a mysterious group helps Miki feel kinship and purpose.

It is always interesting to see another culture’s perspective on familiar folklore. Japan is not well known for their takes on werewolves. That said, this film does a wonderful job tackling the concept. At the heart, the werewolf transition is primal and uncontrollable. Its unwilling participant is at the mercy of something that is now part of them and doesn’t care how disruptive it is. That feeling is universal. Eriko Katagiri’s quiet and contemplative movie translates that through the eyes of modern day Japan, with all its traditions and intricacies. Miki is experiencing something that, true or not, is almost shameful to others, forcing her to face it all alone.

WHEN YOU OPEN THE DOOR plays with its audience. We feel for Miki, but we can’t be sure what to believe. That makes us uncomfortable and forces us to examine ourselves. Do we often discredit what we don’t understand? Do we enable those we love, even to their own detriment?

While not completely perfect, this film is truly unique. It is a werewolf film that strays from traditional scares and, in doing so, stays with the viewer long afterwards. It asks you to empathize and support. It wants you to reflect on your own relationships. It hopes to validate the overlooked and ignored. Most of all, it shows the terror and beauty in becoming what no one else ever believed you could, for better or worse.
