RAVING REVIEW: A little bit all over the place, but with enough fun and intrigue to make the ride worth it. This one will throw a twist that you won’t ever expect.

I love that the film is a little messy; there’s something fun about Halloween shlock, especially one that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I always say that it’s essential that a film knows what it is. Director Chad Ostrom, writer Danny Schluck, and the entire cast play the experience exactly how it needs to be. Taking themselves seriously when needed but also being able to throw that out the window and have fun when the moment arises…

The film had moments that called back to some classic horror films in subtle ways. I sometimes felt like I was watching something straight out of the 80s. A pretty direct storyline with a whodunit feel; there was a bit of a pacing issue from the second act into the third, but then a twist that you couldn’t have seen coming hit at the perfect time. Pulling me right back in and having me hooked through the end (speaking of which, there are some fun tidbits throughout the credits, so definitely stick around for them.)

I was impressed with the horror elements, which harkens back to my statement about knowing what a film is. Too often, in horror, the creative team will try to accomplish something far more than they’re capable of. This causes a jolt to the viewer, taking them out of the film. I never once felt that way here, each scene was handled with care, and you could tell there was someone that cared about the look whenever the moment came.

Overall, this was a fun spooky season treat with a little more adult content than I expected, but hey, that’s part of the genre!
