RAVING REVIEW: A potential look at what the future of music and art potentially could be. The band YACHT is no stranger to controversy, and while there is regret in past actions, they chose to try and learn from their mistakes.

In 2016, the band (comprising of Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans) reported a “leaked” sex tape between the group’s two members and eventually faced the media’s consequences for the act. There was no leak; however, there was a tape; the leak was a hoax and publicity stunt. They went so far as even to sell it on their website. They have since come out and apologized and explained their regrets for doing so and diminishing the importance of actual leaks.

I found it interesting that the band chose to have this covered in the documentary as well, furthering their sincerity about the apology. They could have easily chosen to focus on the album that the majority of the documentary is about. There’s something to be said for admitting your wrongs and not try to hide them.

After taking a break from music, the band decided to work on their next album called CHAIN TRIPPING. The difference (from their previous six studio albums) is that this one was created with the help of AI (artificial intelligence) for the entirety, not just the music but the lyrics, art, etc. Most of the film covers their journey of learning how they would do this.

Ironically the band’s name is an acronym; Bechtolt told Spin Magazine, “It stands for Young Americans Challenging High Technology. It refers to an education program that was held in Portland, Oregon. I was enrolled when I was 16, back in 1996.” They challenged technology when they decided to use this “new” tech to create their album.

AI has taken some significant leaps in the past few years and even more so this year with the public release of DALL·E 2, a free-to-use AI for the general public to create images from a prompt.
