RAVING REVIEW: LUMINA delivers a sci-fi escapade that plunges a group of friends into the unknown on a dive into the heart of an alien mystery. Navigating through hidden military bases and expansive deserts, the film crafts a tale of suspense and existential discovery that keeps viewers interested from start to finish.

Director Gino Mckoy’s LUMINA explores the depths of human bonds’ resilience under extraordinary circumstances. The film charts the journey of Alex (Rupert Lazarus) and his companions as they attempt to decipher the baffling disappearance of their friend Tatiana (Eleanor Williams,) leading them into the foreboding terrains of covert operations and extraterrestrial intrigue.

At the heart of LUMINA is a party, where past meets present as Alex introduces Tatiana to his former and current friend groups, including his ex, Delilah (Andrea Tivadar.) The evening’s tensions erupt when Tatiana inexplicably vanishes, propelling Alex into a vortex of alien conspiracy theories, further stoked by his association with George (Ken Lawson,) a fervent believer in otherworldly phenomena. This compels the group to undertake a daring expedition to a secret base, thrusting them into a confrontation with the unknown and covert government agents. The ensemble cast, led by the one and only Eric Roberts, delivers performances that capture the emotional stakes of their characters’ journey.

Despite the challenges of shooting during a global pandemic, Mckoy’s directorial style is evident. His fascination with alien abduction lends an authentic voice to the narrative, addressing the stigmatization and skepticism abductees face with a unique insight.

LUMINA maintains suspense and provokes thought, questioning our place in the universe and the possibility of other sentient beings. The film’s visual storytelling, bolstered by striking scenic designs and special effects, immerses the audience in a meticulously crafted world.

Nonetheless, LUMINA occasionally struggles with its pacing. With a two-hour runtime, the film explores a lot and may have bitten off more than it could handle, allowing for some specific narratives that could have benefited from a more in-depth development. A more streamlined edit would have ensured a smoother flow and a more focused exploration of its central themes.

One can’t help but wish for a more robust presentation of sci-fi visuals throughout the film. The moments featuring these elements are mesmerizing and genuinely capture the genre’s essence. A more consistent integration of these otherworldly visual effects and imaginative sci-fi landscapes could have elevated the movie’s overall atmospheric impact. This would complement the film’s rich storyline and deepen the immersion into its extraordinary world.

LUMINA stands as a compelling testament to the potential of science fiction to blend speculative elements with poignant human stories. It challenges viewers to consider profound questions about existence and the more substantial way we are all connected framed within the confines of a sci-fi adventure. This film is for those drawn to narratives combining speculative intrigue with a deep exploration of human emotions and the quest for understanding in an uncertain universe.

  1. Very good review with great insight into the the mingling of genres which is not generally the norm. The addition of romance appeals to a more female audience which is often absent in most Sci-Fi films. Also the comedy was well placed and the score & music put some heart & rhythm into this memorable journey.

  2. Thank you! I couldn’t agree more! It really was such a unique blend. Seeing it all work together is what made the film so memorable!
