This One Shocked Me in the Best Way Possible

Easily one of the biggest surprises of the year for me so far. From the start, I was blown away as the director, Agnieszka Smoczynska, stated, “It is a story that is unlike any other.” I think that’s probably the best way to describe the film. Many may recognize Letitia Wright, but she’s just one of many incredible stars in this film. One of my favorite aspects is that the actors playing the younger versions of Wright and Tamara Lawrance’s characters were fantastic. Not only was the casting on the spot looking like younger versions of the leads, but Leah Mondesir-Simmonds and Eva-Arianna Baxter embodied the stars respectfully.

The story itself is a beautiful tale (and true story) of two incredible young women that redefine what you expect from a film. Based on the book of the same name by author Marjorie Wallace, the film explores their world and the world within their world through a creative narrative and incredible visuals.

While I don’t agree with all of Wright’s real-world decisions, her passion for this film was evident. Even more so, she wanted to ensure that this story was told with care “I don’t want to show them as freaks. They were artists, they were very sensitive, and I want to show them as human beings.” I think that dedication made the film successful; someone could’ve easily stepped in and played this role of outcasts, but instead, Wright wanted to show what these young women were.

The twins were given this public perception of being a danger to themselves and others. The truth behind their story is perhaps more intriguing than any fictional story. While I could go on forever about the story and the story behind it, I feel the best way to experience this is to just watch it. Without question, this will end up being one of the year’s most memorable films for me. Shock after shock!
