RAVING REVIEW: If you have not heard of Geoff McFetridge, you’ve still more than likely seen his art. From high-end fashion brands to Apple to murals, McFetridge’s work is everywhere. But who is the man behind the designs? That’s what Dan Covert’s documentary GEOFF MCFETRIDGE: DRAWING A LIFE sets out to explore.

Drawing a Life takes us on a cinematic journey through McFetridge’s life, showcasing the man’s passion for balance in everything he does. McFetridge is a devoted father and a gifted ultramarathoner, seeking meaning in all aspects of his life. The film takes the standard struggling artist and flips the script on the story. Through director Dan Covert’s lens, we’re invited to reflect on the essential questions: what gives our lives meaning, and how can we live with intention?

Some may question why a feature-length documentary is necessary for a relatively unknown artist. But Drawing a Life is far from self-indulgent. Instead, the film explores art’s place in our world, delving into the complex relationship between creativity and commerce. It also examines artists’ unique challenges in a constantly changing world.

Covert’s journey to create Drawing a Life began nearly twenty years ago when he first discovered McFetridge’s art. Initially tasked with creating a short film, Covert soon realized that there was much more to the story than a short film could capture. The project evolved into a full-length documentary, offering viewers an unprecedented look at McFetridge’s life and work.

Covert looks into McFetridge’s unique approach to life and art throughout the film, making the story about McFetridge’s commitment and passion, which helps continue to push him daily to the next part of his life. Drawing a Life encourages viewers to reflect on their own lives and priorities and asks us all to consider what matters.

McFetridge’s career spans various mediums, including animation, textiles, wallpaper, and painting. His work has been exhibited worldwide, and he’s collaborated with some of the biggest names in fashion and design, including Hermes, Vans, and Apple. No wonder he was honored with the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Award in 2016 and the AIGA Medal in 2019.

At its heart, Drawing a Life shows the depth of creativity, appreciation for family, and his true identity. The film encourages us to think deeply about what truly matters and how to make the most of our time. Whether you’re a fan of McFetridge’s art or just looking to broaden your horizons, this documentary will leave you feeling inspired and motivated to live with intention.
