RAVING REVIEW: The newest entry from Kino Cult delivers SINNER: THE SECRET DIARY OF A NYMPHOMANIAC, which explores a unique corner of cinema, allowing director Jesús "Jess" Franco to boldly venture into the complex dynamics of human sexuality and societal battles. The film revolves around the enigmatic Montserrat Prous as Linda, whose past haunts her every move. Mr. Ortiz (Manuel Pereiro) unknowingly becomes crucial to her life's turning point.

Set in the raw and unpolished setting of 70s Spain, the film intertwines Linda's life with Ortiz. This connection leads to a chain of events ending in tragedy. Jacqueline Laurent, as Ortiz's determined wife Rosa, embarks on a quest to unravel the truth behind Linda's life, which reveals a world tarnished by vice, addiction, and the grim underbelly of prostitution. Franco is quickly becoming one of my favorite lesser-known directors; with an unpolished and raw take on life, his films aren’t afraid to show the darker side of everyday life while presenting a no-fear exploration of sexuality on screen.

Franco's narrative style in SINNER shines distinctly; someone mentioned that he echoed Orson Welles' style with its intricate weaving of reality and perception. This storytelling method provides a layered view of Linda's experiences, employing avant-garde techniques that add a more profound critique of societal norms while exploring personal calamities.

Prous's portrayal of Linda is nothing short of striking. Her intense, unguarded performance contrasts against some of Franco’s previous leads, injecting raw emotion and depth into her scenes, especially those laden with profound emotional distress.

The film's minimalistic style, a creative choice borne of budgetary limits, sometimes detracts from the immersive experience. Despite these hiccups, the movie's atmospheric tone and well-crafted script keep the narrative gripping and engaging.

SINNER also marks a pivotal moment in Franco's directorial journey, reflecting his adaptation to the evolving landscape of 70s cinema. Influenced by the erotic drama genre, the film's thematic and stylistic choices testify to Franco's growth and willingness to explore new territories. The haunting and otherworldly ambiance of the film is further amplified by the soundtrack, with compositions by Roger Davy and Vladimir Cosma enhancing the film’s visual narrative.

SINNER: THE SECRET DIARY OF A NYMPHOMANIAC is a thought-provoking and complex film demonstrating the director's adeptness at navigating the dark and intricate facets of human experience. It is a significant work in his filmography, challenging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about society and human nature.
