A fun, although slightly the numbers family superhero film. The synopsis reads, “While hanging out after school, Charlie and his friends discover the headquarters of the world's most powerful superhero hidden beneath his home. When villains attack, they must team up to defend the headquarters and save the world.” That’s precisely what you get, and that’s not all bad. Owen Wilson is the draw here, and he gives a pretty Owen Wilson performance. If you’re a fan of his, you’ll know he plays a version of himself in every film. Ironically I think I mentioned this in the review of his last movie, MARRY ME.

While Wilson is the big name draw here, I found it interesting that relative newcomer Abby James Washington stole the show. She made her presence known in every scene; something about her charm shifted the focus to her character. Along with Washington, Michael Peña’s (ANT-MAN, AMERICAN HUSTLE) character in the film was an underused joy; I honestly wouldn’t mind a spinoff just focusing on him entirely.

For being a straight-to-streaming release, I was impressed with the level of detail given to the CGI and the “look” of the effects in the film. They were very refined and made this universe seem a lot more grounded. For the last decade or so, I’ve thought we were in the golden age of TV. The quality of shows and films created for the small screen and the budgets behind them have been mindboggling. I continue to be impressed and am interested to see how far we go before the line between theatrical releases and straight to streaming is blurred.

If you’re looking for family entertainment and have Paramount+, this would be fun to pop on for a movie night.
