Where To Watch: The Innocents comes to Shudder on August 18

While this originally came out back in May, it’s getting its release on Shudder now, and I have to admit I wasn’t as impressed as I had hoped. I had heard a lot of positives about the film leading up to its release and the reviews that followed. Ultimately, it just wasn’t for me; I felt like I had seen this story repeatedly to a varying degree. In terms of child actors, these left me with an all-encompassing fear of unease and dread. I feel like that was part of the draw, but I also felt like, generally speaking, the film was kind of generic.

If you want a film that does this better, in my opinion, I would recommend THE CHILDREN. Although knowing Hollywood, there’s probably already an American remake of this in the works. Depending on how they handle it, I could also see it being enjoyable. I will say that I appreciated the inclusion in this film without feeling forced. To me, that’s an essential aspect of making comments like this irrelevant. Someday in the future, I hope that film is inclusive across the board so everyone can see themselves on screen.

Horror seems to be ripe with children that are out of control, and for better or worse, I feel like we’ll have this subgenre for years to come. It’s nothing new either; I think most every way it can be done has been. That’s not to say something won’t come along someday and blow my mind, but in general, I haven’t been impressed with one for some time. As always, that’s just my two cents; this doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it, so give it a try! (or wait for the inevitable remake…)
