RAVING REVIEW: Halfway through writing this review, I decided that I wouldn’t even give the most minor spoilers regarding the “twist” in this film. If you want to watch this, don’t read more about it than you have to, and just jump in for the experience! LITTLE JAR explores solitude's vast realms and the creative bursts it can inspire in a world where silence can speak louder than words. Ainsley, a character Kelsey Gunn impeccably embodies, is trying to wade through 2020's unexpected challenges. She basks in the break from the daily grind, but soon, life's playful mischief, like glitchy gadgets, paints her surroundings in hues of silence. This film genuinely got to me in the best way possible; I’ve never felt so heard!
Now, enter Ulysses. Not your everyday protagonist, but a charming friend who offers Ainsley the comfort of companionship. Their dynamic stands out, echoing iconic screen duos that have left an indelible mark. But it’s not all smiles, as Ainsley's profound bond with Ulysses makes her hesitant to embrace external connections again. The well-meaning delivery guy Marvin, brilliantly portrayed by Nicholas Anthony Reid, and even her family, Emre (Jon Snow), find it tough to breach her cocoon.
The plot thickens, as it often does in gripping dramas (even though this is without question a comedy, the dramedy aspect is front and center) when Penelope, a surprise “foe,” scurries into Ainsley's life. A flurry of emotions challenges Ainsley while turning her space into a palatial pad for Ulysses. Through this, the film underscores a stark reality: solitude, when extended, can be both a solace and a snare.
Brimming with chuckles and choked-up moments, LITTLE JAR is an introspective reflection, reminding viewers of their resilience during earth-shaking moments. Gunn’s portrayal strikes a chord, balancing quirky antics with heartfelt sentiments. Director Dominic López’s cinematic brilliance guides the cast as LITTLE JAR sparkles as an emblem of innovation even in daunting times. It’s hard to overlook its innate charisma and soulful core of film, cast, and crew. LITTLE JAR emerged from the tumultuous waters of 2020 and the worldwide pandemic. Amidst the solitude of a Lake Arrowhead cabin, the intrepid team pulled off a cinematic whirlwind despite run-ins with mischievous wildlife and touchy equipment. From tackling erratic external noises to facing evacuation threats, it was a journey punctuated with pitfalls. But adversity is often a master teacher. Through these trials, the crew crafted what can only be described as cinematic brilliance, presenting us with the delightful LITTLE JAR.
The story behind Ulysses, a curious memento from Kelsey's past, is a testament to the fact that it's often the quirkiest moments that echo profound tales. In essence, LITTLE JAR doesn't just depict a journey through silence. It dances with the human spirit, toasts innovation, and celebrates our eternal search for connections, even amidst the profound echoes of life's quieter moments.
