RAVING REVIEW: UNSUNG HERO captures the audience with its potent mix of gripping drama, soul, and heartfelt music. Joel Smallbone's directorial debut, assisted by co-director and film veteran Richard Ramsey, transforms the Smallbone family's real-life struggles and victories into a narrative that resonates with anyone who cherishes the enduring values of faith and family in the face of adversity.

Set against a backdrop of musical ambition, UNSUNG HERO follows the story of David Smallbone and his family, who, led by the patriarch portrayed by Joel Smallbone himself (this almost meta approach feels like it shouldn’t work, but does,) migrate from Australia to the USA, aiming to rebuild their lives after a failure that almost costs them everything. With only their musical talent and minimal belongings in tow, David, his pregnant wife Helen (Daisy Betts), and their children embark on a path filled with challenges but also with hope and the sky as the limit. Helen's faith is a guiding compass for their journey, illuminating their darkest moments and encouraging persistence.

The narrative explores the family’s understanding of their self-discovery and the blossoming of their musical talents, ultimately propelling them to prominence in inspirational music. The movie delves into the essence of overcoming obstacles through unwavering belief and mutual support. While I may not be a “religious” person, I can still appreciate the approach taken in the film.

UNSUNG HERO is steeped in personal connections and family bonds. Joel Smallbone doesn’t just play his father on screen; he infuses the screenplay he co-wrote with his brother Luke with a sense of reality that offers audiences a glimpse into the personal sacrifices and pivotal decisions that have defined their family dynamics and careers.

The cast ensemble, featuring talents like Jonathan Jackson, Candace Cameron Bure, and others, adds diversity to the film, promising a broader appeal. Even if I disagree with some of Bure’s “takes,” it’s undeniable that her name still draws an audience.

Furthermore, the release of UNSUNG HERO is timed to coincide with the KING + COUNTRY (the Christian pop group consisting of Joel and Luke Smallbone)  "Homecoming" tour, starting in late May 2024.

UNSUNG HERO celebrates the power of faith and the strength of dreams. It invites viewers to ponder their values and the importance of home and heritage. The Smallbone family’s experiences demonstrate that it is possible to start anew and succeed with resilience, determination, and a touch of divine guidance.

Joel Smallbone’s venture into directing with UNSUNG HERO beckons audiences to explore their roots and the melodies that define them. This film will leave a lasting impression, inspiring some viewers with its compelling story and meaningful themes. It offers a motivational journey that can resonate long after the closing credits.
