I just want to forewarn you that you need to make sure that you’re prepared for this film if you’re interested. There are a lot of interviews that cover topics that could be triggering to some. I just ask that you make sure you know what you’re in for before diving into the film. That isn’t a knock on the movie at all! This is a film that shows the heartache and battles that the band Life of Agony pushed through in their “rise, fall, and rebirth” in the Brooklyn alternative metal scene. More than that, though, it’s a somber message of what fame, even on a local level, can do to someone. We’re all going through our battles daily. When you take that and put it under a microscope of the public eye, that weight can become unbearable.

The band itself has been around since the summer of 1989, when singer Mina Caputo, bassist Alan Robert, and guitarist Joey Z. recorded some demos; this was the start of the group's story. There are a lot of ups and downs, but as of 2014, the group has reunited and is still active.

This documentary focuses on issues ranging from depression, the struggle with drugs, Mina’s gender transition, and a host of other hurdles that have had to overcome to be where they are today. The movie isn’t a light watch, meaning that it shows what truly goes through these artists' minds as they cope with the onslaught of life.

Music documentaries are hit or miss; it’s hard to remain faithful to the music but show the truth that the members are going through. Director Leigh Brooks is familiar with band documentaries; this is the follow-up to the doc TERRORVISION: WIRED UP AND SCARY, which covered the band Terrorvision’s tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their hit album. THE SOUND OF SCARS is so successful because it’s an unabashed dive into the three friends' lives and the strength it takes to be who you are and overcome the worst in life.
