Do you know that feeling when you’re looking forward to a movie and building it up in your head, you finally get to see it, and it’s not even close to what you were hoping for? That happened several months ago when I saw X. Thankfully, that’s not the experience I had here. This was everything I had hoped it would be; it was intelligent, funny, and timely. I’ve seen a lot of comments about the slang used in the film and how there was too much of it. I honestly can’t disagree with that take enough. The film is a perfect reflection of the times that it’s trying to emulate.

Without the soundtrack/score and the incredible cast to pull it all together, the film itself wouldn't have been anything. I appreciate the writing, but honestly, the cast created this film. One of my current favorite young actors in Hollywood, Rachel Sennott, was one of the ensemble cast, and while I still enjoyed her last film, SHIVA BABY more, this was fantastic. She was also incredible in this, but the entire cast was too. I knew who Pete Davidson (THE KING OF STATEN ISLAND) was. Still, beyond that, the only other actor I recognized was Maria Bakalova (BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM), but I had to check that after the movie because I wasn’t 100% sure. It says a lot about the ensemble that they worked so well together.

Honestly more of a dark comedy/atmospheric thriller than a horror film, but I think that just added to the experience. I wasn’t sure what to expect; I’ve done my best to avoid trailers for the film at all costs. I had only seen one, and thankfully only part of it. All I knew about the film was the same as what I could’ve taken from the poster.

If you want to take a risk and don’t mind some modern-day “slang,” definitely check this out. It should be expanding this coming weekend again to even more theaters! This will easily make my top films of the year list.
